Film Discussion via ZOOM – Free Solo (Registration)

Film Discussion via ZOOM – Free Solo (Registration)

Saturday, January 30

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free Solo – “a climb in which a climber uses no artificial aids for support and has no rope or other safety equipment for protection in case of a fall” – Merriam Webster

On June 3, 2017 climber Alex Honnold became the first – and to date only – human being to perform a free solo climb of El Capitan, a 3000 foot sheer granite cliff in Yosemite National Park; a feat which renowned climber Tommy Caldwell called “The moon landing of free soloing.”

Alex’s amazing accomplishment is chronicled in the National Geographic documentary Free Solo, which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.  Borrow the DVD of Free Solo from the Westchester Library System, available here, and watch the movie beforehand at your leisure (the film is also available on the paid streaming services Hulu and Disney+).

Then join us for a discussion of the film as well as any other documentaries you have seen on January 30th.  SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER joining the discussion and giving his insights will be Corey Piller, a member of the Stealth Vikings Rock Climbing Team from the Cliffs gym in Valhalla, NY.

Register with dobref@wlsmail.org to get the Zoom link – please indicate you are registering for this program in the email.
