RiverArts, in conjunction with the Hastings and the Dobbs Ferry Public Libraries, is hosting a discussion of the 1933 film The Emperor Jones, based on the play by Eugene O’Neill and starring Paul Robeson. You are encouraged to watch the film and two short documentaries prior to the discussion – link for the Race Film / Race Matters website and the movie itself here.
Register at RiverArts.org to participate in a discussion about this movie, moderated by Tanya McKinnon, Dobbs Ferry resident, literary agent and former RiverArts Board member.
This program is part of a Humanities New York funded project: Race Films/Race Matters. The film contains some stereotypical dialect, exoticising depictions of the inhabitants of a Caribbean island, use of the n-word – but also includes a bravura performance by Paul Robeson.
