Meet the Author & Launch Party: Lynn Schmeidler

Meet the Author & Launch Party: Lynn Schmeidler

Thursday, April 4

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Lynn Schmeidler will present her new book, “Half-Lives”

  • Reception at 7:00 p.m.
  • The reading by Lynn Schmeidler will start at 7:30 and will be followed by an interview with Hastings resident Barbara Feinberg, creator and director of Story Shop.
  • Book signing provided by Picture Book of Dobbs Ferry.

A playful debut short story collection imagining women’s lives in a world free of social limitations.

Amid heightened restrictions about what women can and cannot do with their bodies, Lynn Schmeidler’s debut short story collection, Half-Lives, is a humane, absurd, and timely collection of narratives centering on women’s bodies and psyches. Playful and experimental, these sixteen stories explore girlhood, sexuality, motherhood, identity, and aging in a world where structures of societal norms, narrative, gender, and sometimes even physics do not apply. The protagonists grapple with the roles they choose and with those that are thrust upon them as they navigate their ever-evolving emotional lives.

Half-Lives is the 2023 Rising Writer Prize winner, selected by Matt Bell.

Reader's Circle: "Our Missing Hearts" by Celeste Ng

Reader’s Circle: “Our Missing Hearts” by Celeste Ng

Thursday, April 11

1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

In the Community Room, for National Library Week

A novel about a mother’s unbreakable love in a world consumed by fear.

“Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic—including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old.

Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change.”

Ever since Ellie wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, she’s been bullied about her weight. To cope, she tries to live by the Fat Girl Rules—like “no making waves,” “avoid eating in public,” and “don’t move so fast that your body jiggles.” And she’s found her safe space—her swimming pool—where she feels weightless in a fat-obsessed world. In the water, she can stretch herself out like a starfish and take up all the room she wants. It’s also where she can get away from her pushy mom, who thinks criticizing Ellie’s weight will motivate her to diet. Fortunately, Ellie has allies in her dad, her therapist, and her new neighbor, Catalina, who loves Ellie for who she is. With this support buoying her, Ellie might finally be able to cast aside the Fat Girl Rules and starfish in real life—by unapologetically being her own fabulous self.

Tween Book Club: “Starfish” by Lisa Fipps

Tuesday, April 16

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Ages 8-12

Join us for a once-a-month kids’ book club! We read a new book every month, then meet discuss our thoughts and do a trivia battle against each other! This month, we will be reading Starfish by Lisa Fipps.

Hybrid Virtual and In-Person Town and Gown Literary Discussion Group: Celebrate Earth Day

Hybrid Virtual and In-Person Town and Gown Literary Discussion Group: Celebrate Earth Day

Wednesday, April 17

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

What does Earth Day mean to you? Find or write a poem, short story, or essay that embodies Earth Day. Share it and read it aloud to the group!

Send the title and author to Sara by April 6th. We will mail them out to read ahead of time. In the meeting we’ll read what you have contributed and talk about what inspired you to choose it.

Register with sbramble@dobbsferrylibrary.org to get the Zoom link — please indicate the title and date of the program you are registering for!
